Focus Features has premiered the trailer for filmmaker Robert Eggers’ re-imagining of F.W. Murnau’s legendary original 1922 feature “Nosferatu”.

A long-gestating dream project of “The Witch,” “The Lighthouse” and “The Northman” director Eggers, the trailer premiered with copies of “The Bikeriders” in cinemas this past weekend.

The story is dubbed a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman in 19th-century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.

Murnau’s original was shot in black-and-white with a German Expressionism cinematic style, this is being done in color and boasts an artistic style more akin to 19th century Romanticism.

Bill Skarsgard, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicolas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson and Simon McBurney star in the film which was shot in Prague a year ago.

Skarsgard, who play the vampire Count Orlok, remains in shadow in the trailer so his full appearance has yet to be revealed. Unlike with his Pennywise in the “IT” films where the actor is recognisable under the make-up, Eggers has spoken about how Skarsgard ‘completely disappears’ here.

“Nosferatu” will open in cinemas on Christmas Day.
