Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out” sequel broke records in its debut last weekend and looks to do the same again in its sophomore three-day run.
In its second weekend, the film is tracking for at least an $85 million haul domestically with some saying the number could go as high as $95 million.
To put that in comparison, It will easily beat “Frozen 2” at $85.9 million and “Incredibles 2” at $80.3 million to have the best second weekend ever for a Disney animated film.
It also beats last year’s highest-earning film – “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” – had a second weekend of $92.3 million. In fact, “Inside Out 2” is charting ahead of ‘Mario’ at this time – by end of Thursday it was up to $255 million over its first week of business as opposed to ‘Mario’ which was at $240 million after one week.
By the end of today (Day 8 of its business), it will have surpassed the entire domestic box-office run of “Dune: Part Two” ($282.1M) to become the year’s highest-grossing film to date.
The film looks well on the way to cracking the half-billion mark domestically by the end of its run, and worldwide it already surpassed that milestone sometime earlier today.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” will come in second with $16 million for its third weekend – a drop of 53%. Its running toal stands at $144.1 million domestically so far and is trailing “Bad Boys for Life” at the same point in time by only $4 million.
“The Bikeriders” will open in third place with a $9 million haul for the weekend – right in line with expectations. “The Garfield Movie” with $4 million and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” with $3.8 million round out the top five.
The other new release, the Russell Crowe-led meta genre film “The Exorcism,” is set to only take in $1.9 million for the weekend. Reviews from critics are negative and audiences mixed at best.
The results come as Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter confirmed this week an “Inside Out” spin-off series will premiere on Disney+ in the spring of 2025.
