It’s official, Kevin Costner will not be returning to his role as John Dutton for the final run of “Yellowstone” on Paramount Network.
The cabler announced a November 10th return date for the final episodes of the series yesterday, and less than 24 hours later Costner has nixed any chance of his possible return to the series in a video post on Instagram.
It follows on from months of Costner being ambiguous about his potential return. Costner has been very vocal about his frustrations with the series and Sheridan, namely issues of contract disputes and scheduling.
However, he always made sure to include some sort of caveat suggesting he’s open to return for the final run – albeit on his terms. It looks like those terms couldn’t be met, so he n ow says:
“I want to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on Horizon and doing all the things that’s required, and thinking about Yellowstone, that beloved series that I love, that I know you love, I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue Season 5B or into the future.
It was something that really changed me. I loved it. And I know you loved it. And I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning and I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop and I’ll see you at the movies.”
Filming schedules for both those final episodes, and the next part of Costner’s “Horizon” western film saga, are vague. The first of the “Horizon” films, which Costner independently finances, opens next week with projections indicating a worrying $12 million domestic debut for the $100 million-budgeted feature.
