Beloved and iconic actor Donald Sutherland has sadly passed away at the age of 88. Sutherland’s passing is reportedly in the wake of a long battle with illness.
Sutherland kicked off his acting career in 1960 and has essentially never stopped working – picking up an honorary Oscar, an Emmy Award and two Golden Globes.
His son and fellow actor Kiefer Sutherland has issued a statement on social media confirming the news and praising his father:
“With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad, or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
In some ways it would be easier to list the films Sutherland was not in, he was that prolific. His first credited work was in 1962 on “Studio 4”, his last was in last year’s Paramount+ series “Lawmen: Bass Reeves”.
In between he chocked up nearly 200 film and TV credits to his name with incredibly memorable roles in “JFK,” “Citizen X,” “M*A*S*H,” “Don’t Look Now,” “The Dirty Dozen,” “Klute,” “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” “Animal House,” “Pride and Prejudice,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Backdraft,” “The Italian Job,” “Cold Mountain,” “Space Cowboys,” “Outbreak,” “Lock Up,” “Ordeal by Innocence,” “Murder By Decree,” “The Great Train Robbery,” “The Day of the Locust” and “The Hunger Games” franchise and that’s merely scratching the surface.
Our sincerest condolences go out to his family, friends and many fans.
