Eddie Murphy says he’s open to doing a fifth “Beverly Hills Cop” film should the soon-to-release “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” do well.

Murphy first played Axel Foley in 1984’s “Beverly Hills Cop” before reprising the role in 1987 and 1994. Thirty years after the third, he’s back for this.

The actor was seemingly retired until the success of “Dolemite is My Name” in 2019 quickly leading to “Coming 2 America,” “You People,” “Candy Cane Lane” and now this.

Appearing on TODAY, 63-year-old Murphy was asked if he would be up for another turn as Axel Foley to which he sounds good with the idea:

“I hope so because this movie turned out so good, especially if you grew up watching the movie, then you’ll really, really love this new picture.

‘Beverly Hills Cop’ was my first movie that I’m the lead in. And if I travel overseas, they call me Axel Foley. To this (day), they’ll call me, ‘Alex Foley’.

Axel is the everyman. He’s not a superhero or supercop. He’s the everyman that rises to the occasion. I think that’s why people like him. And, more than anything, he’s funny.”

He adds he’s past any thought of retirement, suggesting he may be going to go the Tom Cruise or Ridley Scott route – he’ll keep going until he no longer can: “I think I will keep being a creative person ‘til the day I die.”

“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” releases on Netflix on July 3rd.
