Blumhouse’s A.I. killer doll movie M3GAN is getting a spin-off – an erotic thriller with robots titled “SOULM8TE”.
Kate Dolan (“You Are Not My Mother”) is on board to direct the feature and recently rewrote the script originally penned by Rafael Jordan (“Salvage Marines”).
Jordan, James Wan and Ingrid Bisu crafted the story which reportedly aims to harken back to those lurid domestic thrillers of the late 1980s/early 1990s – albeit with a modern, technological twist.
In the film, a man acquires an A.I. android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate.
Dolan said in a statement: “Fundamentally, I view this film as an exploration of relationships and loneliness. Despite technological advances, there are enduring human truths we cannot escape, and I am looking forward to delving into those depths.”
Wan and Jason Blum are producing the project which is dubbed an expansion of the “M3GAN” universe and has already locked in a January 2nd 2026 release date.
The first “M3GAN” opened January 6th 2023 and racked up $181 million worldwide. A direct sequel is already on the way and will open June 2025.
