“Will & Grace” creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan are teaming with producing giant Ryan Murphy for a project that’s being dubbed a gayer take on the iconic sitcom “The Golden Girls”.
Matt Bomer, Nathan Lane and Linda Lavin will star in the multi-camera Hulu series which will be titled “Mid-Century Modern”.
The original “Golden Girls” followed four female retirees living in Florida – promiscuous southerner Blanche, naive mid-westerner Rose, the strong-willed & sarcastic Dorothy, and Dorothy’s well-timed quipping Sicilian mother Sophia.
In ‘Modern,’ Bomer will play the Rose-like ditzy one, Lane will be the Dorothy of the bunch, and Lavin will play Lane’s mother (the Sophia one).
The series follows three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age – who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one (Lane) lives with his mother and a naked Gen Z housekeeper.
James Burrows is directing the pilot while Mutchnick, Kohan, Burrows, Lane and Bomer will executive produce for 20th Television.
