Amazon’s “The Boys” has unveiled the first three episodes of the fourth season, and a major critical/audience divide is once again showing – not unlike the new “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte”.
On Rotten Tomatoes, critics scores have remained fairly steady – 85% (7.7/10) for the first season which is the weakest to date. The second landed a 97% (8.2/10), the third a 98% (8.1/10), and the fourth a 95% (7.7/10).
Of note, all eight episodes have been made available to critics as opposed to something like “The Acolyte” where only four episodes of its run were reviewed.
Audience scores, however, fell steadily and have now taken a nosedive. The first season of “The Boys” racked up a 90% (4.3/5), the second an 83% (4.1/5), the third a 75% (3.8/5) and the fourth has now plummeted to a 49% (2.9/5).
The results are similar on Metacritic with critics scores for the four seasons are 74, 80, 77, 76 out of 100 and audience figures are 7.7, 6.9, 7.1 and 4.0 out of 10. This has led to calls of review bombing.
Plenty of the negative dub it ‘woke garbage’ and a substantial number either directly or indirectly quote or respond to showrunner Eric Kripke’s comments the other week saying those who find the show ‘woke’ should “go watch something else”.
Others take issue with Frenchie’s small subplot involving a romance with a man, or the show making its far-right satire so overt this season as, up until this point, they’ve seen the show as apolitical.
In terms of non-political-centric complaints, there’s plenty who seem to have issues with the writing. What did you think of the season so far? Have your say below. SPOILERS are allowed so be warned if you haven’t caught up.
