A sequel to Mel Brooks’ iconic 1987 “Star Wars” parody film “Spaceballs” is in early development at Amazon MGM Studios.
New details on the project have emerged via The Insneider, and subsequently confirmed by THR. The film was first teased by actor/writer/producer Josh Gad with a cryptic Instagram post a few weeks ago.
In that post he teased he had: “just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I am so freaking excited”.
Gad will direct the film from a script he co-wrote with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Mutant Mayhem” scribes Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez.
Gad and Brooks himself will produce and Gad is attached to play a role in the movie. Plot specifics of the new take are under wraps.
Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga and the voice of Joan Rivers starred in the film which earned $38.1 million at the box office. It has since become a cult hit and is considered one of Brooks’ most famous films.
Kevin Salter will serve as executive producer on the new take.
