By Ten years after unleashing their cult horror film “It Follows” into cinemas, filmmaker David Robert Mitchell and actress Maika Monroe reunite for the sequel “They Follow” which will shoot later this year.
The news came as a surprise as, unlike so many other horror franchises, Mitchell originally didn’t seem to have any intent on doing a follow-up despite the film’s success. It wasn’t until late last year however that it was revealed that he had an idea too good not to explore.
The first film involves a supernatural curse transmitted by sexual contact. The victim is pursued by an entity that only they can see and can take the appearance of any person.
It only moves at a walking pace, but always knows where the victim is and relentlessly approaches them until it catches and kills them before pursuing the previous person to have passed it on. The only way to keep death away is to pass the curse to someone else who will be next on the list.
Speaking about what to expect, Monroe tells Collider that we ill “100% get something new” with the sequel and she talks about having read the script:
“But as you know with the first film, I’m not taking any credit in this, David is brilliant. I mean, he is brilliant. The whole movie transformed at that point. It was changing the game in the genre, and he wouldn’t ever make a sequel if he didn’t think it was going to top it . He’s very specific, turns down so many.
He just knows what he wants to do and what he wants to make. I mean, at first I’m like, ‘Oh, a sequel? Where are we going to go here?’ And I read it, and it’s just so f—ing good. It’s so good. I’m so excited. I think where you’ll meet Jay at this point is maybe not what’s expected, but it’s so cool. It’s just, of course, as everyone says for sequels, literally, though, is just bigger and darker and more f—-d up. Reading it was the craziest thing ever.”
Mitchell has only had one film since released – 2018’s Andrew Garfield-led “Under the Silver Lake”. He recently completed filming on a 1980s dinosaur movie titled “Flowervale Street”. That film stars Anne Hathaway and Oscar Isaac and is due for release next year.
