Even though he’s currently filming “Superman” and has the second season of “Peacemaker” in the works, filmmaker James Gunn has taken the time to answer some fan questions about his upcoming projects.
Gunn also attended the Annecy Animation Festival this past week to promote his DC animated series, “Creature Commandos”. The series will launch in December and officially mark the first effort from the new DC Universe.
It has been revealed (via THR) that the new series picks up directly after the “Peacemaker” first season finale with Amanda Waller’s hands tied operationally. As she can’t recruit human lives to carry out her clandestine dangerous missions, she turns to a ragtag band of misfits and monsters.
Speaking about how that series works within the context of the larger new DCU, he says it isn’t just a throwaway one-off:
“It’s a cornerstone of the legacy we’ve been entrusted to carry at DC Studios and plays an integral role in the vision for our future storytelling.
Since taking the reins, our true north has been to bring DC film, TV, animation, and gaming into alignment under a single banner and bring a sense of unity and consistency to the DCU as a whole.
This frees us to create a range of products that are diverse and compelling, and deliver great stand-alone entertainment experiences on every medium, while also being part of a larger story that we’re telling with our unified DCU.
What this means in practical terms is that our characters can move in and out of animation or jump into a game or onto the big screen, but they will remain consistent throughout: same character, same history, same actor.”
Of course, that begs the question of whether the new DCU will eventually run into the same problems the current Marvel cinematic universe is facing. Namely, one of so much continuity that if you miss some entries you can feel left behind.
Asked that specifically during the Q&A, Gunn says anyone should be able to come in on any film or series and not have to worry about doing extra homework:
“Although they’re connected and in the same universe, every project should work as an individual story in and of itself.”
Gunn also used the opportunity to debunk recent casting reports of the DCU’s eventual Batman movie saying on Threads that they haven’t begun casting yet for the DCU’s Batman and says (via Screen Rant) that Bruce Wayne won’t appear in the “Superman” film.
Further asked if Bruce Wayne will only be a little or a lot older than Clark, Gunn clarified that all he said before was that Bruce ‘could be a couple years older than Clark’, and all he means is that he isn’t tied to them being the same age.
“Creature Commandos” will launch in December followed by “Superman” in July next year. A release date for the DCU “Batman” film hasn’t been set yet.
