Hot off his success as showrunner of the final season of “Star Trek: Picard,” writer/producer Terry Matalas has been set to write an update of the cult 1985 sci-fi feature “Enemy Mine” at 20th Century Studios.
The story is based on a 1979 novella by the sci-fi author Barry B. Longyear and takes place in a future where mankind is warring with a reptilian alien species.
Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr. played human and alien pilots respectively who crash land on a desolate planet. Despite hatred for one another, they are forced to overcome their prejudices to survive.
The film was a commercial and critical flop at the time, but has subsequently been reappraised and has a small cult following.
It was also famous for its behind-the-scenes issues with original director Richard Loncraine (“Firewall,” “Richard III”) fired during production. German filmmaker Wolfgang Petersen (“Troy,” “Air Force One”) ended up taking over the film and had to reshoot big chunks – leading to a budget blowout.
No producer or director is currently on board the remake. Matalas also served as showrunner on Syfy’s “12 Monkeys” and is also set to showrun a new untitled Marvel Television series centered on Vision.
