HBO has handed out an early renewal order for its “Game of Thrones” spin-off series “House of the Dragon,” granting the show a third season just days before the long-awaited second season premieres on June 16th.
Based on Martin’s fantasy book “Fire & Blood,” the show unfolds two centuries before the events of “Game of Thrones” and tells the complicated story of House Targaryen.
The new second season deal with an all-out war between the Blacks (Rhaenyra, Daemon) and the Greens (Aegon, the Hightowers). Much of the new season’s marketing has revolved around the feuding ‘colors’.
Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming, said in a statement on Thursday:
“George [R.R. Martin], [showrunner] Ryan [Condal], and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon.
We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular Season 2, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for Season 3.”
The second season consists of eight episodes, down from the ten of the first, and runs from June 16th through August 4th.
