Anything new in Disney’s “Star Wars” universe causes a reaction; that’s a given. On a fairly regular basis there also seems to be controversy, division, heated exchanges and discourse that’s joyful, hateful and fiery.
The recently launched “The Acolyte” series was already drawing a varied response. Critics seem to be really digging it, while audience scores are in the pits and being slammed for review bombing due to floods of 0.5 & 10 star reviews suddenly appearing.
Topics regarding the show have also been trending from the rise of the #YordHorde to a viral clip with the show’s star and creator discussing “Star Wars” and sexuality.
Even then, the Kogonada-directed third episode “Destiny” has drawn reaction that has proven even more extreme. The reviews for the episode, a standalone affair set in the past, are wild and varied and the series has been the top trending topic on X for hours.
On the one hand you have outlets like Forbes calling it “an embarrassment to the entire franchise”. On the other Den of Geek says it has a “gravity and grit the show’s marketing promised but has been missing up to this point.”
SPOILERS AHEAD
Plenty are nitpicking logical inconsistencies and bad dialogue, and part of the fandom is having a problem with a revelation about the twins’ birth via some form of induced parthenogenesis, whilst others have issues with the episode’s portrayal of the Jedi and their motives which seem to be indoctrinating children into religion.
A good write-up at GameSpot has gone into the episode and suggests the reveal and its impact on the plot going forward could turn this into a direct prequel to the prequel trilogy.
User reviews on IMDb so far sit at 4.5/10 with an astounding 48.6% of those giving the episode a 1/10 score. What did you think? Have your say in the comments below. SPOILERS are allowed so you’ve been warned.
