By Netflix has exited plans for a live-action “Power Rangers” TV series that has been in the works for over two years.
Jinsakuu (via TV Line) reports that the show is no longer moving forward at the streaming giant, and franchise owner Hasbro Entertainment is exploring a “new creative direction for the series with a new partner”.
The project counted Jenny Klein (“Daisy Jones & The Six,” “Supernatural”) as showrunner who would work in collaboration with “Power Rangers” franchise chief Jonathan Entwistle (“The End Of The F—-ing World”).
The first “Power Rangers” series debuted in 1993, spawning multiple films and shows in the process. Most recently came the reunion telemovie “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always” which released on Netflix last year.
When this project was set up, it was seen as the potential launcher for a franchise with eOne’s President of Global Television, Michael Lombardo, saying at the time: “we pitched really a whole-world approach. It’s not just one show; it is shows followed by films, some kids’ programming.”
Entwistle & co. was expected to start afresh rather than build upon the 2016 film reboot at Lionsgate which did well with the critics but failed at the box-office.
