Bad Boys: Ride Or Die was tracking well, but nobody expected this. The Sony Pictures release is way ahead of expectations as weekend box office results come in from both domestic and international markets.
The four-quel (is that a thing? Quad-quel?) pulled in $104.6 million globally this weekend. That is way ahead of the $70 million tracking. This was split $56 million domestically, and $48.6 million from overseas.
This makes it the highest-grossing R-rated opening since Oppenheimer last year. So what is it? The world feels starved of Will Smith since the Oscars incident a few years back? Everyone simply wanted an entertaining, undemanding action flick with LOLs? Something is driving this. A few weeks ago Sony said they were quietly confident in the future of the cinema experience.
Garfield The Movie was second with $10 million domestically and $15.3 million overseas for a worldwide total of $192.7 million.
John Krasinki’s IF added another $8 million domestically, and $6.2 million overseas for a total of $160.7 million.
Further down the table, there was more bad news for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. That movie dropped to sixth place in its third weekend with $4.2 million, a 61% drop. Globally it sits at $144.4 million with more coming from overseas than the US. Either way, it seems to prove our theory that Mad Max belongs in the Blade Runner bucket – movies we get very excited about but the wider world is largely apathetic towards.
June will bring us Inside Out 2 and A Quiet Place: Day One before it is over.
