Paramount+ has set Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti as the main villain of the first season of its upcoming “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” series.
His recurring guest role marks the second major piece of casting on the show following actress Holly Hunter boarding in a series regular role as the Academy’s captain and chancellor.
All that’s known about Giamatti’s character is that he is the season’s ‘big bad’ and has a sinister connection to the past of one of the core set of yet to be cast cadets.
Showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau say in a statement:
“Sometimes you’re lucky enough to discover that one of the greatest actors alive is also a huge ‘Star Trek’ fan, and meeting Paul was one of those miraculous moments for us.
The sheer delight with which he dove in on ‘Starfleet Academy’ is only surpassed by the gratitude we feel about him joining our incredible cast.”
The series, which unfolds in the 32nd century setting seen in the latter seasons of “Star Trek: Discovery,” boasts the largest contiguous set ever constructed for a “Star Trek” series with a two-storey academic atrium.
The series will chronicle the lives of the cadets of Starfleet Academy as they train for a career onboard a starship helping preseve the United Federation of Planets.
Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Weber also executive produce.
