By Sony Pictures’ “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” isn’t just offering a much-needed boost to the domestic box office; it’s doing the same for the international box office as well.
The fourth feature in the action franchise earned $104.6 million globally this weekend – $56 million domestically, and $48.6 million from overseas.
Domestically, it was the highest-grossing R-rated opening since “Oppenheimer” last July, and Will Smith’s sixth-highest domestic opening overall.
Internationally, it was just a tiny bit shy of 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life,” which debuted to $50.3 million in its first overseas weekend. It achieved franchise-best numbers in Latin America and the Middle East.
The opening obliterated that of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” just over two weeks ago – that film domestically was pushed to sixth place in its third weekend with $4.2 million (down 61%). Internationally it did stronger with $13.7 million. Globally it sits at $144.4 million with a $58M/$85M) domestic-overseas split.
“Garfield The Movie” continues its solid hold in its third weekend – taking $10 million domestically for second place and a further $15.3 million overseas with a worldwide total so far of $192.7 million.
Not far behind was John Krasinki’s “IF” which added another $8 million domestically in third place, and $6.2 million overseas with a global total of $160.7 million at present.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” has been the biggest hit of the Summer thus far and currently sits at $359.8 million worldwide. This weekend’s earnings helped push the franchise’s overall total past the $2 billion mark.
Finally, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” has surpassed “Kong Skull Island” to become the highest grossing entry in the Legendary and Warner Bros Monsterverse franchise with a $570 million haul from a budget of under $150 million.
