After nearly forty years in operation, the famed Japanese animation producer Gainax has filed for bankruptcy.
Gainax made the announcement on Friday through its own website, saying it filed its petition with the courts on May 29th.
The company was founded in 1984 by a team including Anno Hideaki, Sadamoto Yoshiyuki, Yamaga Hiroyuki, Akai Takami, Takeda Yasuhiro and Higuchi Shinji. Many have since left.
Its most famous work by far has been the “Neon Genesis Evangelion” franchise. Anno launched it in 1995 and it became a juggernaut of a commercial hit globally with revenues of over $2 billion.
Other key works have included “Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water,” “Gunbuster” and “Gurren Lagann”.
Gainax has been carrying a heavy debt burden for several years, a problem made worse by mismanagement. The scale of those liabilities is undisclosed.
The news comes just a day before the kick-off of the world’s biggest annual animation festival, the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
