Bethesda and id Software have unveiled the first footage from “Doom: The Dark Ages,” a prequel to the various prior “Doom” titles which is coming in 2025.

In development for four years, at one time internally referred to as Year Zero, the title sees a fur-cloaked Doom Slayer using a shield and guns to kill various demons and even riding a dragon at one point.

An opening crawl in the trailer confirms this is a time before the Doomslayer’s Mars heroics – a time when he was the ‘weapon of Gods and Kings’. Cue a metal meets medieval aesthetic.

The title follows on from id Software’s 2016 reboot and 2020’s “Doom: Eternal,” both of which scored rave reviews. The latter also landed five nominations at The Game Awards 2020, including Game of the Year.

The new title will be cross-platform and available on PS5, Xbox and PC at launch including Game Pass on Day One.

It marks a needed win for Bethesda who saw several studios under its banner, including Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin, shuttered by Microsoft recently.
