The cast of James Gunn’s Superman continues to build, with a number of small but potentially key characters emerging in the background. It seems like the world of Superman, particularly the newsroom at the Daily Planet, may be a little deeper than we have seen before on the big screen.

First up, Saturday Night Live veteran and comedian Beck Bennett has signed up. Bennett will reportedly play one of the notable reporters at the Daily Planet, a loudmouthed and self-centred Steve Lombardo.

Joining him in the newsroom are Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald. I got all excited for a moment as I thought it was THE Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore. I was wrong.

This McDonald will play the role of Ron Troupe. In the comics, he was one of the best reporters at the Planet and ended up having a son with Lois Lane’s sister Lucy Lane.

Meanwhile, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Hoover is playing Cat Grant. She was a gossip columnist at the planet and a maneater who lusted after Clark Kent, wanting to seduce the mild-mannered country boy. In Lois & Clark she was played by Tracey Scroggins.

For Supergirl, the character was updated and played by Calista Flockhart.

Superman is currently in production in Atlanta with David Corenswet starring as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

It starts with Superman already on Earth and early in his career at the Daily Planet and will follow him as he looks to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Superman will open in cinemas on July 11th 2025.
