By Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” is known for pushing boundaries, pitch black humor, and characters that are fascinating to watch even if many of these very self-centered people make you squirm.
Series showrunner Eric Kripke has been quite straightfoward about what the show is and the far-right mentality it is skewering. This can most notably be seen with the series’ main antagonist Homelander who has raped, slaughtered and intimidated countless people.
Yet famously, a portion of the audience didn’t seem to understand that Anthony Starr’s caped character, a gleefully played dark spin on Superman, was a villain until the third season when the topic was widely discussed as it aired.
This led to some complaints that the show had become ‘woke’ to which showrunner Eric Kripke has a response. Speaking with THR, he says:
“I clearly have a perspective, and I’m not shy about putting that perspective in the show. Anyone who wants to call the show ‘woke’ or whatever, that’s OK. Go watch something else.
But I’m certainly not going to pull any punches or apologize for what we’re doing. Some people who watch it think Homelander is the hero. What do you say to that? The show’s many things. Subtle isn’t one of them. So if that’s the message you’re getting from it, I just throw up my hands.”
Separately, Kripke spoke with TV Line about spin-off series “Gen V” and how they will handle the unexpected death of actor Chance Perdomo who played Andre.
Rather than recast, they took over a month off to re-write the season and now the Andre character will reportedly have passed away in the series and the episodes will deal with the fallout. Kripke says:
“We’re not trying to replace him because we can’t. We’re playing the character’s death on the show. So it’s very heavy and it’s really emotionally difficult for the cast. And we’re just trying to honor Chance as best we can.”
The second season of that show is now three weeks into production and is likely to air sometime next year. “The Boys” Season 4 premieres on June 13th, check out an extended ‘Deep Thoughts’ clip released on the official channel for the series below.
