Weekend estimates for Sony’s buddy action comedy “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” continue to rise with the film now tracking for a $53 million opening weekend according to THR.

The film, which reunites Will Smith with Martin Lawrence, has pulled in an A- CinemaScore in audience exit polls – a good indication they are happy with the film, though not as high as the other entries in the series which all managed a full ‘A’.

That said, all other audience polls are glowing – 84% definite recommend on PostTrak and a 97% Rotten Tomatoes audience score.

It marks the first film of the summer to come in ahead of tracking and the second biggest opening behind “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”. It does fall short of the $62 million its predecessor “Bad Boys for Life” made, but that film was coming off an 18-year gap between entries – not four years like this.

Sony had another win with “The Garfield Movie” holding onto second place with an estimated $10.3 million for the weekend. “IF” held onto third with $8.5 million.

The other newcomer this weekend was Ishana Shyamalan’s “The Watchers” which is headed for a $6.7-7.1 million weekend. Critics reviews are bad, audience reviews are mixed and the C- CinemaScore isn’t good even for a horror film (which skew to B/C on these polls) so expect this to jump to VOD fairly fast.

George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is dying quickly it seems. World of Reel reports that the prequel film is down 60% in its third weekend with a gross of just $4.2 million – not even making the Top 5.

The film’s production + marketing costs suggest a break-even point of $420 million worldwide, but they add that the “absolute best-case scenario is $175 million worldwide by the end of its run” – suggesting the film’s potential losses could come in over $200 million.

Having lost a lot of premium screens to “Bad Boys,” will Warners try and get this on PVOD soon to generate some extra revenue?
