The exhibition sector sighed with relief today as the numbers have come in and the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-led fourth “Bad Boys” film, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” is headed for a strong box-office opening.
Early projections had the film targeting a $40-50 million debut, but those numbers were revised downwards to a $30-40 million estimate earlier this week – scaring cinema owners who expected the film to do well.
Then it opened last night and the $5.9 million Thursday preview haul was the best number for an R-rated film since “Oppenheimer” last July.
Including that into its count, the $100 million budget film is set for an opening day haul of $20-21 million – even with competition from the first night of NBA Finals.
Projections for the three-day weekend are now back up to $50 million. It marks a welcome bit of news after costly event movies like “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa” seriously underperformed and overall box-office remains significantly down on last year.
Sony will also hold the second spot at the box-office with “The Garfield Movie” expected to earn further $10 million this weekend. Third will be “IF” with $7.1 million, fourth is Ishana Shyamalan’s costly $30 million horror film “The Watchers” with just $3 million.
Fifth is “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” which will pull in another $5.8 million and has surpassed the domestic gross of “War for the Planet of the Apes” at $150 million.
