The first of the four films in Kevin Costner’s big-budget “Horizon: An American Saga” hit early tracking on Tuesday and the results… aren’t good.
Deemed one of the year’s biggest swings, the three-hour western, which the “Yellowstone” star both acts in and directs, is heading for a domestic opening of around $12 million says THR.
Costner is amongst those backing the independently financed film which reportedly cost $100 million to produce before marketing. Premiering at Cannes, this film so far has mixed/slightly negative reviews with a 41% (5.5/10) on Rotten Tomatoes.
Costner has reportedly sunk $38 million of his own wealth into the project to pursue his own vision. Warner Bros. Pictures is handling the film domestically whilst foreign sales contributed significantly to the budget.
Tracking is much better for “A Quiet Place: Day One” which opens the same weekend and will likely top the chart with a decent $40 million.
The trade says Costner believes that tracking isn’t capturing his fan base which largely resides in the middle of the country. Indeed, tracking projections have been off this year which has only raised concerns.
Whatever the result, the film will be followed quickly by “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” on August 6th. Costner has started filming on Chapter 3, but needs more funds to complete his vision.
