Normally these days, when a movie gets savaged by reviews, the standard approach in Hollywood is to blame somebody. Usually the fans, usually by attacking them as toxic or something. Refreshingly, that is not what Layer Cake and X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn has done with bad reviews for Argylle.
The comedy thriller seemed to have all the right ingredients. A director who had shown pedigree in this area through movies like Kick-Ass and Kingsman. A strong cast of Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Sam Rockwell. Dua Lipa looking slinky. And yet the movie cratered.
33% on Rotten Tomatoes and a box office of $96 million on a $200 million budget. It wasn’t loved by critics or fans and failed to find an audience.
Vaughan recently gave an interview to Empire and was open and honest about how it made him feel:
“My guard came down on Argylle. We had done test screenings that had gone fantastically well. The premiere was a really fun night, and it was like going back to the Snatch days where there was such excitement.
I started drinking the Kool-Aid. It’s a fun, feel-good movie, or I thought it was a fun, feel-good movie.
He goes on to say:
We didn’t make Citizen Kane but fucking hell, then the reviews came out and I’m like, ‘Wait, what have I done to offend these people?’
Asked if it affected him personally, he admits he was rattled by it and had to have a period of introspection:
“They were vitriolic. I’m not saying the movie’s perfect by any means, but I didn’t think it was offensive. That took me by surprise. It did rattle me. I’m genuinely scratching my head about that, because you can’t ignore it. It wasn’t like [just] a few bad reviews. It is what it is. You learn from these things.”
To us here at LMO, at $200 million it was always set for an uphill battle and plays into what we have all been saying for a while about movies being too expensive, and really having to offer something special to get us out to the movie theater.
Argylle is now streaming on Apple TV+, which may let it find its audience.
