Amazon Prime Video is reportedly set to release a six-episode live-action series adaptation of the SEGA game franchise “Like a Dragon”/”Yakuza”.
Deemed a crime-suspense-action series with gritty realism, the project is being directed by Take Masaharu (“100 Yen Love”) and Takimoto Kengo (“Kamen Teacher”). Takeuchi Ryoma will take on the lead character of Kiryu Kazuma.
The series unfolds over two time periods, 1995 and 2005, and follows “the life, childhood friends and the repercussions of the decisions of a fearsome and peerless Yakuza warrior with a strong sense of justice, duty, and humanity.”
Sean Crouch and Nakamura Yugo created the story and screenplay, with a Japanese screenplay penned by Yoshida Yasuhiro and Yamada Kana.
The title will premiere on Amazon in two batches of three episodes with a week between each. The first launches October 25th and the second on November 1st. It will be subtitled and dubbed in thirty languages.
The first “Yakuza” title was released in 2005 by SEGA for PS2, PS3 and Wii U. Multiple direct sequels, prequels, remakes and spin-offs set in the same universe were created.
More recently, it changed its name to the original “Like a Dragon” Japanese franchise name and released three titles in the past year or so – “Like a Dragon: Ishin!,” “Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name” and “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth”.
Erik Barmack, Roberto Grande and Joshua Long executive produce.
