Pixar’s upcoming “Inside Out” sequel is expected to be one of the biggest films of the year, and Disney is reportedly vowing to ensure its success by giving it something only a few films are getting this year – a long theatrical exclusivity window.
Pixar president Jim Morris tells Bloomberg that “Inside Out 2” will screen for at least 100 days in cinemas, more than double the 47-day window of “Lightyear” and the 89-day window of “Elemental” on the Disney+ service.
That means the earliest the film will arrive on digital platforms would be late September. The aim is to help reverse the consumer mindset after short-lived Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s decision to have three Pixar films – “Soul,” “Luca,” and “Turning Red”- bypass theaters and jump directly to the Disney+ service.
This seemingly “trained audiences to expect Pixar pictures to premiere on their phones and in their homes instead of in cinemas” according to the outlet. “Lightyear” was seen as a victim of this, as was “Elemental” at the beginning.
Disney stuck with it, though, leading to “Elemental” staying in cinemas and ultimately doing well at the box-office. Morris aims to continue that trend:
“I hope that we will not release another feature film on Disney+. If we do more stuff for Disney+, it should be a series, and then that makes a clean demarcation between what we do for theaters and what we do for streaming.”
Pixar’s first animated TV series, “Win or Lose,” will premiere later this year on Disney+ while an “Inside Out” spinoff series titled “Dream Productions” is in the works for 2025.
The first “Inside Out” grossed $858 million worldwide. The sequel arrives in cinemas on June 14th.
