It seems like the Big-G cannot be stopped. Godzilla Minus One arrived on streaming on Saturday with absolutely zero fanfare or pre-release managed hype. It was just there one morning, and word of mouth spread the news like wildfire.

Outposters worldwide cleared their Saturday nights, sent the kids to bed early and cracked open a bottle of something to settle down and watch it. It seems we were not alone. Quite a few more people out there in the world did the same thing.

Sneaking up on a home release

According to a report on the ever-reliable Dark Horizons, the movie smashed straight through to top charts.

It was released both on Netflix and on VOD at the same time. It hit #1 in the charts in both areas on day 1.

It turns out the longer than usual (6-month gap) between cinema and home release was as a result of agreements to keep it clear of Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire. Is this also the reason it was unannounced as it landed on streamers? Either way, it kinda added to the buzz at the weekend, building something of a mystique around the whole affair.

Build up the anticipation with a long delay, and then make it seem like something secret and special that only a few people knew about. Very smart… or accidental? You decide.

After a decent box office haul on a limited release, an Oscar, and now this, Toho must be loving life right now.
