Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg and “Doctor Who” star Ncuti Gatwa have joined the cast of Jay Roach’s “The Roses,” a remake of Danny DeVito’s 1989 divorce-themed pitch black comedy “The War of the Roses” in the works at Searchlight.

Sunita Mani, Zoë Chao, Jamie Demetriou and Belinda Bromilow also are rounding out the cast of the film which will see Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead roles.

Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner starred in the original 1989 film about a wealthy couple – Oliver and Barbara Rose – with a seemingly perfect marriage. As it begins to fall apart, material possessions become the center of an outrageous and bitter divorce battle.

The original marked a third teaming of Douglas, Turner and DeVito who first had success with 1984’s “Romancing the Stone”. ‘Roses’ garnered good reviews and pulled in $160 million worldwide from a $26 million budget.

The new take is being penned by “Poor Things” and “The Favorite” writer Tony McNamara who also created Hulu’s “The Great”. It revolves around Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch), the picture-perfect couple who have successful careers, great kids and an enviable sex life.

But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down.

Colman, Cumberbatch, Roach, Michelle Graham, Adam Ackland, Leah Clarke, Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver produce. Filming aims to begin in the next few weeks.
