French shark movie Under Paris launches on Netflix on June 5th, but if you want to see it you might need to watch it quickly, as it may get yanked at any time.
Under Paris sees the French capital hosting the World Triathlon Championships on the River Seine. Not the Olympics, for copyright and branding reasons. An environmental activist learns that a large shark has taken up residence in the river and must work with a brilliant scientist to solve the problem before a slaughter happens on live television with the world watching.
Now a report in Deadline says that a legal case is underway claiming that the whole idea for the movie was stolen from another writer.
Writer/director Vincent Dietschy alleges that the new film was developed without his knowledge from his original idea. An original idea that he had already registered with rights managers through the official body in France.
The treatment was called Silure and the story involved a giant, carnivorous catfish that wreaks havoc on the river Seine.
Catfish. Chunky.
Dietschy claims he pitched this project to an agent in 2014 and a development file was created and circulated among some producers in 2015.
The producers of Under Paris refute these claims and an initial hearing is set for June 14th. If it rules in favor of Dietschy then the film will have to be pulled from Netflix.
Under Paris stars Bérénice Bejo, Nassim Lyes, Léa Léviant, Iñaki Lartigue, and José Antonio Pedrosa Moreno. Director Xavier Gens previously worked with the streamer on the popular Lupin series, starring Omar Sy, and he has also directed episodes of Gangs Of London and Crossing Lines.
