Silent Hill is a huge video game franchise that’s been scaring the pants off people for many years now. It became so popular that it was turned into a movie in 2006.
The original movie starred Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden, Sean Bean, Deborah Kara Unger, Kim Coates, Alice Krige, Tanya Allen, and Jodelle Ferland. It was directed by Christophe Gans and written by Roger Avery. It wasn’t the best video game-to-movie conversion, but I like it.
There was a sequel, Silent Hill: Revelation, in 2017. That had a great cast, including the returning Radha Mitchell, Deborah Kara Unger, and Sean Bean. Co-starring were Kit Harrington, Carrie Anne-Moss, Adelaide Clemans, and Malcolm McDowell. I have seen it once, but I remember it being bloody awful.
Since then, things were pretty… silent… about Silent Hill, until Gans returned to the director’s chair to make another installment. According to reports, this new movie has nothing to do with the originals, as the story is:
When a mysterious letter calls him back to Silent Hill in search of his lost love, James finds a once-recognizable town and encounters terrifying figures both familiar and new, and begins to question his own sanity.
Return to Silent Hill stars Jeremy Irvine, Hannah Emily Anderson, Robert Strange, Evie Templeton, Eve Macklin, and Howard Saddler. Gans is also serving as a writer, alongside William Josef Schneider and Sandra Vo-Anh.

Reports say that the movie was going to be premiered at Cannes, but in the end, it had a private screening for potential distributors. One of the movie’s producers, Victor Hadida, said:
“Christophe and I have been working closely with our partners at KONAMI, as they update the video game, to also create a version of Silent Hill for the theatrical audiences of today. You will still find the iconic monsters – but there will also be new designs. We are confident that this new film and KONAMI’s updated game together will propel the Silent Hill franchise forward for years to come.“
Oh good, they are going to flog it to death. As I said, I rate the first of the movies. It was far from perfect and the acting was, umm, dodgy. I love Bean, but the dude cannot do an American accent. At least he made it to the end of the movie.
The other thing I liked about the original was the use of practical effects. I think the DVD has some Behind-The-Scenes footage and the makeup and performers were something else. I loved this scene.
