Rockstar Games owner Take-Two has long adopted the strategy of releasing its major titles first on console, and then many months later on PC.
“Grand Theft Auto V” took a full 19 months to make the jump, “Red Dead Redemption 2” took 13 months, and it’s expected the upcoming “Grand Theft Auto VI” will do the same.
During an interview (via VGC) at a TD Cowen conference this week, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was asked about the lack of a PC release date announcement for GTA6 and if the game could be confirmed for the platform at a later date.
Jokes are already running around online that GTA6 will make the jump to PC in late 2026 or early 2027 – jokes that may not be that far off the mark as Strauss responded:
“Well, the lack of an announcement is not something that could be set in stone as near as I could tell, because the only thing that happens after the lack of an announcement is an announcement, I suppose, or a continuing lack of an announcement, I guess that could happen too. It doesn’t seem to me that either would be set in stone.
But Rockstar has an approach to platforms which we’ve seen before, and they will make more announcements in due time. I do believe that the right strategy for our business is to be where the consumer is, and historically what this company has done is address consumers anywhere they are, on any platform that makes sense, over time.”
In other words, this approach has been working for them and they have no plans to change that. The first “Grand Theft Auto 6” trailer was released in December and more recently confirmed a planned Fall 2025 release date for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
“Grand Theft Auto V” has shipped approximately 200 million units since its release in 2013.
