Jumps from cinema releases to VOD are now variable depending upon studios and a film’s performance. Recently “The Fall Guy” made headlines for making the jump to PVOD just 18 days after it opened theatrically.
Years ago Universal made a deal with exhibitors so that films that underperformed at launch could launch within a 17-day window, those that didn’t would wait around a month. They’ve stuck with that strategy ever since.
Warner Bros. Pictures has been more variable. Its theatrical windows of late have included 22 days for “The Color Purple,” 25 days for “The Nun II,” 32 days for “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” 37 days for “Blue Beetle”, and 46 days for its biggest success stories “Dune: Part Two” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”.
Now, a listing on DVDs Release Dates, picked up by World of Reel, suggests that George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” has already set a PVOD release date of June 25th.
If true, that would put it exactly on par with James Wan’s “Aquaman” sequel which managed to gross $434.4 million at the global box-office.
However no other sources have corroborated the date, including any retail giants at present, and Warners certainly hasn’t made any digital release date official so consider the report very much a rumor for now.
So far, “Furiosa” has grossed just $74 million worldwide so far. Domestically it looks to take in $11.5 million for its second weekend and will sit at a total of $50 million in the United States by end of Sunday.
Plenty of editorials have already been written about the film’s theatrical struggles – could a quick PVOD release turn that around?
