By There’s still a few months before the release of “Alien: Romulus,” but filmmaker Fede Alvarez has been teasing a bit more about what to expect from this new entry in the sci-fi franchise.
As previously indicated, this will be a relatively standalone film in that universe, one set in the decades between the events of Ridley Scott’s “Alien” and James Cameron’s “Aliens”.
Speaking with Empire, Alvarez confirmed that time period setting and says that sandwiching between the two best films of the franchise is also telling of the film’s tone which aims to capture the tone and pacing of both despite the obvious differences.
He says: “To ask an ‘Alien’ fan to choose between them is a perverse question. So I thought, ‘How do I do both?’”
The film is set on a space station known as the Renaissance Station which is split into two sections – Romulus and Remus with the former akin to “Aliens” and the latter to “Alien”:
“There’s a moment where the characters are walking around areas familiar from the Nostromo. Then they cross through that building and on the other side: boom! You’re in a hallway that looks like Hadley’s Hope [from Aliens].”
The story follows a group of young space colonists tasked with scavenging a derelict space station, only to realize too late that a terrifying life form is already on board.
A key element is the sibling relationship between Cailee Spaeny’s Rain and David Jonsson as her foster brother Andy who is also an older model android – the pair can be seen in the image above.
“Alien: Romulus” arrives in cinemas on August 16th.
