The planned live-action TV series adaptation of Hasbro’s “Dungeons & Dragons” tabletop fantasy role-playing game franchise has been scrapped at the Paramount+ service.
The streamer gave the project an eight-episode, straight-to-series order back in January last year. Today though, TV Line reports that creative differences have led to Paramount+ ditching the project.
As a result of this, a new creative team is being brought in to redevelop the property and then Hasbro will plan to shop it around elsewhere.
When announced, it was tipped to be a large-scale project potentially launching a small-screen universe spanning multiple scripted and unscripted shows.
Rawson Marshall Thurber (“Skyscraper,” “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story”) wrote the original TV pilot and was set to direct with Drew Crevello (“WeCrashed”) serving as showrunner.
The property was previously adapted into a famed 1980s animated series on CBS that ran for 27 episodes.
On film, it was done in live-action in 2000 to scathing reviews, and more recently as last year’s Chris Pine-led fantasy-comedy “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” which scored very good reviews and grossed $210 million worldwide.
The game involve elves, orcs and other fantastical beings who engage in battles and treasure hunts, with multisided dice as a signature element. More than 50 million fans have played D&D since it was first launched nearly fifty years ago.
