The movie has been trapped in development hell for years and was stood up at both Sony and Netflix before landing at Amazon for a theatrical release in theaters on June 5, 2026.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was one of the first children’s programs to be syndicated on television. Telling the story of He-Man and his battle against the evil Skeletor, the Masters of the Universe franchise has existed across television, movies, and comics for decades after it was created to promote a toy line from Mattel.

Julie Rapaport, head of film production and development at Amazon MGM Studios, said in a statement:

“We’re thrilled to bring the beloved Masters of the Universe to life and couldn’t be more excited to announce the immensely talented Nicholas Galitzine as our He-Man. Joining forces with director Travis Knight, Mattel, and Escape Artists, this reintroduction of the character and his universe will be an epic film that will delight audiences from here to Eternia.”

Mattel Films’ President, Robbie Brenner said:

“Mattel Films is proud to work with Amazon and team up again with the incredible Courtenay Valenti, to bring Masters of the Universe to the big screen. We are thrilled to be producing alongside the highly respected and prolific Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch, with the visionary Travis Knight, and the charismatic and talented Nicholas Galitzine, our Prince Adam/He-Man!”

Galitzine was last seen starring opposite Anne Hathaway in Prime Video’s rom-com The Idea of You.

That was Amazon’s No. 1 rom-com debut of all time, scoring nearly 50 million worldwide viewers in its first two weeks on Prime Video.

Mattel is still riding high on the success of Barbie, and is now following up that way only Hollywood can but thinking that if one was good, more must be better.
