George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” has released and managed to rake in just over $32 million over the four-day holiday weekend.
That made it one of the worst Memorial Weekend debuts in decades and unfortunately it already seems to have stopped any discussion about more “Mad Max” films anytime in the near future.
As we know, director George Miller was developing “The Wasteland” – a film that would’ve served as another prequel to “Fury Road” – this one focusing on Tom Hardy’s Max Rockatansky character and spanning the space of the year before Max is captured by Immortan Joe.
Speaking on the Happy. Sad. Confused. podcast, Miller was asked about the future of the franchise and if “The Wasteland” would ever emerge. He said that depends on the reception of “Furiosa,” and says it is more a saga like “Furiosa” than the more compressed timeline of “Fury Road”:
“I’d say that it certainly has a lot of action in it, but it is also a saga. It’s a year-long story.
‘Fury Road’ happened over three days and two nights. You could almost say that the first act, some part of the second act, and the third act mostly play in real time. Quite a different kettle of fish than ‘Furiosa.’
I’m still figuring out what to do with [‘The Wasteland’]. I’m just waiting to see the reception on ‘Furiosa.’ If it all lines up, then we’ll go ahead with it.”
“Furiosa” has done well with critics, but the box office isn’t so great so far – especially for a costly film that had a production budget of $168 million.
