The first photos have officially been released, via Vanity Fair, of actor Rory Kinnear (“Men,” “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” “The Diplomat”) playing the character of Tom Bombadil in the upcoming second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” on Amazon Prime Video.

Considered one of the most unique figures in the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth, the character is a woodland-dwelling man who dresses in colors, sings, and plays a not small part in “The Fellowship of the Ring” novel.

In it he helped rescue the hobbits from danger and famously was not affected by the powers of the One Ring, along with being seemingly immortal and having lived through multiple ages.

However, both Ralph Bakshi’s animated 1978 film and Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning live-action ‘Rings’ trilogy completely omitted the benevolent character who doesn’t really advance the plot.

In the new season Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.

The cast includes Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, Ismael Cruz Córdova as Arondir, Owain Arthur as Durin IV, Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Míriel, Maxim Baldry as Isildur, Charles Edwards as Celebrimbor, Nazanin Boniadi as Bronwyn, Benjamin Walker as Gil-galad, and Charlie Vickers as Sauron.

Newcomers this season include Stuart Bowman, Selina Lo, Tanya Moodie, Stuart Bowman, Will Keen, Nicholas Woodeson, and Ciarán Hinds. “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” returns August 29th.
