Warner Bros. Discovery has announced “City of God: The Fight Rages On,” a new Brazilian six-episode HBO original series production which will premiere in August this year on HBO and streamer Max.
The series will serve as a follow-up to Fernando Meirelles’ celebrated 2002 feature “City of God” which centered on two boys brought up in the eponymous, crime-ridden worst slum in Rio de Janeiro from the 1960s through the 1980s – a community plagued by disputes between drug dealers, police, and militia men.
That film scored four Academy Awards nominations is often considered one of the greatest films of all time in many Top 50/100 lists.
Produced by O2 Filmes, the series is a continuation of the work first created by Paulo Lins’ 1997 novel that served as the basis of the 2002 film. Events in the new story begin two decades later in the early 2000s.
The series will include excerpts from the film as flashbacks to reconstruct the protagonists’ memories as it follows many of the characters from the original including photographer and journalist Buscapé.
Returning cast from the film include Alexandre Rodrigues as Buscapé Criança/Rocket, Thiago Martins as Lampião, Roberta Rodrigues as Berenice, Sabrina Rosa as Namorada do Galinha, Kiko Marques as Cabeção/Melonhead, and Edson Oliveira as Barbantinho/Stringy.
New cast members include Andréia Horta, Marcos Palmeira, Jefferson Brasil, Eli Ferreira, Luellem de Castro, Otávio Linhares, Rafael Lozano, Leandro Daniel and Luiz Bertazzo.
Andrea Barata Ribeiro and Fernando Meirelles serve as producers and Cris Abi and Gustavo Gontijo as co-producers. Aly Muritiba is the general director, with Bruno Costa as the second director.
Sérgio Machado, Renata Di Carmo, Armando Praça, Estevão Ribeiro, Rodrigo Felha, and Muritiba wrote the script while Mariano Cesar, Anouk Aaron, and Monica Albuquerque executive produce.
