Jeremy Renner was a big part of the ensemble in both “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” and “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” as the character of William Brandt.

However he didn’t return for either ‘Fallout’ or ‘Dead Reckoning Part 1’. People come and go from this franchise all the time so his absence, while noted, isn’t especially surprising.

What wasn’t clear was why he exited. Out promoting the third season of “Mayor of Kingstown,” the actor was asked by Collider why he left “Mission: Impossible” franchise.

Turns out it was all to do with family and geography. He explains:

“Yeah. I had to leave that. I was supposed to do more with them. I love those guys. I love Tom [Cruise] so much. We had so much fun, and I love that character a lot. It requires a lot of time away. It’s all in London. I had to go be a dad. It just wasn’t gonna work out then.”

This led to the actor choosing to be a part of productions largely based in the US such as his various Marvel gigs. Now that his kids are more grown, would he be willing to return in the future? He says:

“Maybe now that my daughter is older that could happen. I’d always jump into a Mission: Impossible anytime and back into Brandt. It’s great.”

Filming on the eighth and seemingly final “Mission: Impossible” is underway though was recently halted due to a malfunctioning submarine that’s a key part of the movie. With plenty left to shoot, there’s the obvious question as to whether Renner could make a cameo appearance.

“The Mayor of Kingstown” third season begins June 2nd whilst the next “Mission: Impossible” is currently slated for May 21st 2025.
