The earliest tracking figures for Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” have gone up with projections for the sequel indicating the movie is on track to challenge for the highest opening at the domestic box office year-to-date.
Deadline reports that the film, which launches for Fathers Day weekend from June 14th-16th, is headed for a domestic start of $80-85 million – right up there with the year’s two biggest openers so far with “Dune Part Two” ($82.5M) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80M).
That marks a welcome comeback for Pixar which saw several titles going direct-to-streaming during the pandemic. Upon returning to cinemas in 2022 with “Lightyear,” that film opened to $50.5 million domestically but only ended up grossing $226.4 million worldwide.
In 2023, “Elemental” had a worse opening with $29.6 million but ended up having legs – so much so it racked up just under half a billion at the box-office by the time it ended its run.
The last Pixar film to open so high was “Toy Story 4” in 2019 which debuted with $120 million in its opening weekend. The first “Inside Out” debuted in 2015 to $90.4 million domestically ahead of an $858 million global gross.
The film follows a now-teenage Riley (Kensington Tallman) as her emotions try to keep up with her new feelings. While Riley still has her emotions of Joy (Poehler), Fear (Tony Hale), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Liza Lapira) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) popping around in her head, the sequel brings in some troublemaking new ones including Envy (Ayo Edebiri) and Anxiety (Maya Hawke).
