We knew it was coming. Ever since the deal closed for Disney to acquire Fox, we knew it was as inevitable as Thanos. It has taken a while, but it looks like Marvel Studios is preparing to move forward with a live-action X-Men movie.

The reaction to their animated X-Men ’97 has been extremely positive. Although in typical current Hollywood style, they did part ways with the writer and creator of that show suddenly a couple of months ago.

Last fall, Feige and Marvel Studios execs started meeting with various writers about the possibility of working on an X-Men project, and then things went quiet. Now, according to a report in Deadline, they have settled on a winner.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes and Now You See Me 3 writer Michael Lesslie has entered negotiations to sign on as the writer. No other talent is attached, no director is set, and no release date is even penciled in. This is simply a first pass at the story and draft script.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will, of course, produce. Chances of this appearing until at least 2027 / 2028 are fairly slim given Marvel’s current slate and the general length of time to develop and cast an ensemble piece like this.

Marvel is also seemingly making efforts to slow down their production line and not lock in movies way before they even have a script, as the issues with projects from Fantastic Four to Blade have come back to bite them.
