After years of teasing, Xbox Studios has finally released “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II” on its platform – delivering the kind of third-person narrative-driven cinematic game its rival PlayStation is mostly known for.

The results, however, are slightly less glowing than both Sony’s biggest AAA exclusives and the game’s own predecessor. With 86 reviews counted, the game is currently sitting at an 81/100 on Metacritic on both PC and Xbox Series X|S.

That’s still a very good score and on par with recent games like “Helldivers 2” (82), “Stellar Blade” (81), “WWE 2K24” (81) and “Multiversus” (80). But it’s not Game of the Year territory which is generally high 80s-90s, and behind the first game which hit an 88/100 on Xbox One and an 83/100 on PC.

Reviews are mostly good though – only one outright negative and 18 mixed compared to 62 positive. Praise is very high for the graphics and visuals, but the combat and gameplay have been criticised.

“Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth” has the highest score of the year so far at 92/100, followed by “Tekken 8” at 90/100, “Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth” at 89, and both “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown” and “Dragon’s Dogma 2” at 86.

PC ports and PS5 remasters of past major PlayStation exclusives also sit high in 2024 with “The Last of Us Part II Remastered” (90), “Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut” (89), and “Horizon: Forbidden West – Complete Edition” (89).

“Hellblade II: Senua’s Saga” is out now on Xbox Game Pass.
