The Memorial Day holiday weekend is about to be upon us and with it comes two major film openings – “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Garfield Movie”.
The former, the fifth entry in George Miller’s post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” franchise, is expected to come out on top at the U.S. domestic box-office with $40-45 million over the four-day Friday-Monday period.
Warner Bros. Pictures reportedly spent $168 million on producing “Furiosa,” not including the cost of marketing, even so its coming in behind 2015’s “Max Max: Fury Road” which debuted to $45 million but over a more regular Friday-Sunday filmgoing weekend.
That film, in the end, grossed $380 million and was hailed as one of the greatest cinematic works of the 2010s. The reviews for “Furiosa” are proving more divided. Whilst the overall sentiment is still quite high, there are good portions of critics who either love or hate it.
Meanwhile, Sony’s animated feature “The Garfield Movie” is targeting to come in second with $30-35 million. The Chris Pratt-led film has already generated $49 million from the overseas markets it has opened early in over the past two weeks.
Reviews for the lasagna-loving cat are decidedly ordinary with a 48% (5.1/10) on Rotten Tomatoes. It will likely push John Krasinski’s fantasy-comedy “IF” off the top spot, with that film’s second weekend haul expected to be around $15-17 million.
Meanwhile Angel Studios’ faith-based biographical drama “Sight” is tracking for $5 million for the long weekend.
