When Netflix announced it was renewing its divisive sci-fi series “3 Body Problem” last week, the news seemed to cause more confusion than jubilation.
Netflix revealed it had ordered “additional episodes” which aims to “finish the story” – taking it through the end of the events depicted in the original novels.
David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo are also returning to executive produce and write the series, but the description of “additional episodes” was loose enough no-one is sure what they meant – is it just a few more episodes or multiple seasons?
Now those showrunners tell THR that while they can’t reveal the exact number of episodes in their new deal, they emphasise it is for “seasons” and the number of episodes aligns with their original plan to adapt the next two novels:
Weiss: “We knew going into this how many hours we need to tell the rest of the story because we’ve got a roadmap through to the end, and we have what we need to get to the end as intended from when we started.
Benioff: By the time we finish with the show, it will be seven years we’ve devoted to it. We’re now at a place where we get to tell the rest of the story, and, yes, we have enough time to tell the rest of the story the way we want to and that’s immensely gratifying.”
The showrunners are currently writing the next season and have so far spent four years working on the show. The first season spent seven weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10, topping those charts for three weeks.
