Adam Wingard, who directed both “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” is not returning for a third installment says multiple sources for THR.
The exit of the “You’re Next” helmer is said to be amicable and all to do with scheduling issues. In fact, they make it clear the door remains open for a future return and Wingard has previously expressed interest in returning to the franchise.
“Godzilla x Kong: New Empire” has grossed over $564 million worldwide since its domestic opening on March 29th and looks set to become the highest-grossing of the five MonsterVerse movies.
Legendary wants to move swiftly on a follow-up, and so already hired “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” scribe Dave Callaham a while back to work on a new script. They are rushing to get the next one in front of cameras and so locking in a director will be a priority.
Wingard, who had no deal in place for another installment, recently unveiled a new original action thriller feature project titled “Onslaught” which he will shoot this Fall for A24. That will keep him busy for a while.
A search is no doubt underway for a potential replacement. Previously directors in the franchise have included Gareth Edwards, Jordan Vogt-Roberts and Michael Dougherty.
