“Anyone But You” and “Top Gun: Maverick” star Glen Powell is set to lead a new version of “Heaven Can Wait” in early development at Paramount Pictures.

Puck News (via THR) broke the news, saying the project is being written by Oscar winner Stephen Gaghan (“Traffic,” “Syriana,” “Dolittle”) based on Harry Segall’s play of the same name.

The property was famously adapted to the screen in 1978 with Warren Beatty directing and in the lead role of a film that landed nine Oscar nominations.

It followed Beatty as an NFL quarterback who dies prematurely due to an antsy angel and returns to Earth in the body of a recently murdered millionaire.

Both 1941’s “Here Comes Mr. Jordan” and 2001’s Chris Rock-led “Down to Earth” have adapted the play as well.

Powell and Gaghan’s version is not described as a remake but will feature the same concept of “a man plucked away before his time”.

Powell will be seen this Summer in Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” on Netflix and Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters” in cinemas. He recently booked Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man” remake, the revenge drama “Huntington” and a new J.J. Abrams film.
