The first film of Kevin Costner’s four-film western epic “Horizon: An American Saga” and French director Coralie Forgeat’s body horror thriller “The Substance” have both had major debuts at Cannes.
The Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley-led “The Substance” received an 11-minute standing ovation on Sunday night. Moore stars as a once-great actress stuck doing a Jane Fonda-style fitness show due to her age.
She’s offered a trial of a medical treatment cream promising a younger, better version of herself through a cell replicating process. Upon trying it, Qualley emerges from her spine whole with the two characters allowed to coexist on the condition they trade one week on, one week off in each body.
As Variety puts it, the film is filled with “some of the most grotesque prosthetics in recent memory”. The applause level beat the record set by “Emilia Pérez” which got a 9-minute ovation on Saturday night.
The news comes as Kevin Costner’s three-hour “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” debuted to a 7-minute standing ovation. Costner thanked the audience and promised “three more” installments are on the way with the second due in August.
The same outlet reports that there were scores of walkouts throughout the film but many attendees returned. Reviews are already popping up online with high praise for the production values but more than a few comparing it to a mini-series and overall reaction seemingly mixed/mildly positive.
“Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” debuts in U.S. cinemas on June 28th. No word on when “The Substance” will release.
