Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has an answer in regards to why the individual reports about the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise in recent years have often described quite different films.
Turns out there’s more than one in the works with Bruckheimer telling EW: “It’s two different movies. We hope to get ’em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too.”
One will be a reboot with an entirely new cast, the other will be a female-centric film with Margot Robbie starring.
The reboot is likely the one that “The Last of Us” creator Craig Mazin and original ‘Pirates’ screenwriter Ted Elliot came up with the story for. Now it seems the reboot’s actual screenplay is being penned by Jeff Nathanson (“The Young Woman and the Sea”).
From all indications it will be the one to go first but the script still needs to be finalised:
“I think [Jeff Nathanson has] cracked it. He’s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we’ll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act.”
It’s unlikely Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow will show up in either of the films, even if the producer would love to have him there:
“It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it. I love him. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing artist and he’s a unique look.”
No word on when the Margot Robbie-led one might get going, and the actress certainly has a busy dance card over the next few years. Either way, seven years on from the last ‘Pirates’ film, it seems the franchise may actually return.
